About

Janet Syrcle, RN (ret.), IBCLC, RLC
I am a board-certified, registered lactation consultant. I have been assisting breastfeeding
mothers and babies for 40+ years. I am a retired maternal-child registered nurse.
I have supported breastfeeding mothers and babies in situations including low milk supply,
mothers and babies struggling with latch difficulties, mother returning to work, adoptive
mothers, and multiples. I strive to stay current in the latest breastfeeding research and
continue to gather new information and techniques to assist breastfeeding mothers and
babies.
I love the Lord & find helping new mothers with their babies a real blessing.

What is a Lactation Consultant and Why Do I Need One?
A Lactation Consultant is a specialist in lactation management. He or she possesses
the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to provide substantive breastfeeding
assistance and skilled technical management of specific lactation problems.
How will you know if YOUR lactation consultant is qualified? Look for the
initials IBCLC- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. An IBCLC
has spent many hours counseling breastfeeding mothers and had extensive training
in breastfeeding before sitting for the rigorous exam. There are many community
sources of support for the basic breastfeeding issues and information, such as family
and friends, WIC Peer Counselors, La Leche League, etc. You may require more than
basic breastfeeding support; a Lactation Consultant can offer professional assistance at a
reasonable cost.
You might want to consult a lactation consultant:
  • If you are encountering difficult latch-on
  • If you have persistent sore cracked nipples
  • If baby is not gaining weight appropriately
  • If you are needing to develop a plan for returning to work
  • If you are just not feeling confident with breastfeeding
  • If you need a quality prenatal breastfeeding class
Usually a visit with a lactation consultant is cheaper than the cost of one of month
formula. It is worth the investment to seek help that will allow you to continue to
breastfeed, not only to save the cost of formula, but also for the savings you will have in
doctor visits, dental visits and the priceless emotional and psychological advantages of
breastfeeding for both mother and baby.
